Cubic Metre Calculator
Length by width by depth, across multiple sections, in cubic metres.
How this calculator works
Enter length, width and depth in metres for each section and the calculator multiplies them into cubic metres. Add extra sections for jobs with multiple parts and it totals everything.
Litres and cubic yards are shown alongside: 1 cubic metre is 1,000 litres or about 1.31 cubic yards.
For depths quoted in millimetres, divide by 1,000 first: 100mm is 0.1 metres. A 5m by 4m area at 100mm deep is 5 × 4 × 0.1, which is 2 cubic metres.
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 m³ | 1,000 litres |
| 1 m³ | 1.308 cubic yards |
| 1 m³ of water | 1 tonne |
| 100mm depth | 0.1m |
| 1 trailer load (6×4) | about 0.7m³ level filled |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate cubic metres?
Multiply length by width by depth, all in metres. A 5m by 4m area dug 0.2m deep is 4 cubic metres.
How many litres in a cubic metre?
Exactly 1,000 litres. A 300 litre garden bed is 0.3 cubic metres of soil.
How do I convert millimetre depths?
Divide millimetres by 1,000 to get metres before multiplying. 75mm of mulch is 0.075m, so 20 square metres at 75mm is 1.5 cubic metres.
How many cubic metres fit in a box trailer?
A standard 6×4 trailer holds about 0.7 cubic metres level filled, but check weight first: 0.7 cubic metres of soil weighs about 900kg, above many trailer ratings.
